A team of researchers whose work has been published in the journal Biological Psychiatry, published by Elsevier, has discovered that enhancing a receptor called N-methyl D-aspartate (NMDA) glutamate produce​s​ anti-depressant effects. Prior studies​ had​ indicated that both hyper function and hypofunction of the NMDA receptor is somehow involved in depression, but until now most studies have focused on antagonizing (blocking), the receptor.
