The Nissan e-NV200, a 100 percent electric compact cargo vehicle, will hit the road in the North America to make deliveries for FedEx. The announcement was made earlier this week at the Washington Auto Show. The EV addition to FedEx’s delivery fleet is part of the company’s EarthSmart program, a global sustainability drive to make its operations more environmentally-friendly world over. Nissan is also committed to making its operations more sustainable and socially responsible through its Blue Citizenship package whose main focus is to increase the number of no-emissions vehicles by exploring additional vehicle segments where its leading electric vehicle...

(3BL Media/Just Means) - GM’s Parma Metal Center in Ohio has gone through a revamp that has made the facility more energy efficient. Through a collaboration with General Electric, the plant’s baler house underwent a project to replace 80 metal halide and fluorescent fixtures with 68 LED fixtures from Albeo Technologies. The result: more than $30,000 in annual savings plus an extra $8,000 in annual maintenance costs.

GM said the upfront investment ran close to $55,0000, so in about a year it will get its money back and make real savings thenceforth. The environment will also benefit as less energy spent means fewer GHG emissions. The upgrades will save more than 500...

(3BL Media/Just Means) - In the new Environmental Protection Agency’s Fuel Economy list for 2014 models, electric vehicles once shine brightly, thanks to their sustainability credentials. The list was based on criteria that looked at combined city and highway fuel economy estimates (weighted by 55% city and 45% highway). Boeing Looks To Green Diesel To Make Aviation More Sustainable (3BL Media/Justmeans) - In order to make flying more sustainable, Boeing is looking to the ground. The company is currently working with the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration and other stakeholders to get approval for green diesel, used in ground transport to be used on aircrafts. This way, the industry would further reduce its emissions.

Green diesel is made from oils and fats. Boeing researchers found that they are have similar chemical properties to current aviation biofuel and could be blended directly with traditional jet fuel.

"Green diesel approval would be a major breakthrough in the...

Honda’s plant in Russells Point, Ohio, will start operations of two wind turbines, making it the first major automotive manufacturing facility in the United States to get part of the power it needs from on-site wind turbines. The plant will reduce its emissions, thanks to the clean 10,000-megawatt hours (MWH) per year the turbines will produce, as studies of the location and wind speeds predict.

The genesis of the project dates back to February 2012, when Honda announced it would install a source of renewable energy at the plant. That was followed by a thorough evaluation of the alternatives, which concluded that wind was the ideal choice. The turbines...

Students from the MFA Design for Social Innovation at the School of Visual Arts (SVA) have put work on the table that reflects on one of contemporary society’s major topics: food. Food has always been a major concern for health and overall social welfare, but these days, with our globalized and environmentally compromised global production system, it has taken on an even greater urgent importance, relating to large topics such as climate change, water use, human overpopulation, animal welfare and the use of pesticides, to name but a few.

Aptly called “Putting It All on the Table,” each of the 12 artists featured was given a wooden table to present their...

(3BL Media/Justmeans) - Recently, the results of the 2012 Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) revealed that U.S. 15-year-olds score poorly in math, reading and science in comparison with their counterparts in Shanghai, Singapore and other Asian places. The students' scores were particularly low in math, a pattern that has not changed much since the PISA test started to be given in 2000.

Some educational experts believe these results reveal stagnant performance levels while Education Secretary Arne Duncan called the results a “brutal truth,” according to an article in the Washington Post. There are concerns the U.S. is losing its...

The recycling events are open to the public, and are a part of the group’s commitment to a cleaner environment.

The first of two collections took place January 7th at the AnythingIT Fair Lawn Headquarters in Fair Lawn, New Jersey. AnythingIT, which is E-Stewards certified, is the electronics...

It sounds like the stuff of science fiction, but it now it is the stuff of science reality. A company called Newlight Technologies has developed a process whereby air pollution is extracted and turned into plastic, making it not only sustainable but also carbon negative by removing more carbon than it makes.

According to a story about this technology breakthrough on USA Today, company CEO Mark Herrema says the idea for the invention goes back to his student days at Princeton when he became concerned about the rise in emissions that cause global warming. At that moment he decided to do something...
