This week our attention is focused on World Water Day, which takes place on March 22. The 2014 focus is on the water/energy nexus. Water is one of the greatest environmental challenges of this century. Increasing human population, productivity and climate change are putting enormous pressure on water resources, with tragic consequences for hundreds of millions of people.

In many parts of the world, access to clean water is an everyday struggle. One of these places is the Trojes Municipality in Honduras, a coffee-farming region with a population of 52,000 people across 270 rural communities. Drinking water in Trojes is sourced from springs, rivers and rain...

(3BL Media/Justmeans) - Many of us want to help the environment and produce tangible results in the process. But how to do that is a challenge. Tapping into the power of online social networking, myActions provides a neat platform solve that dilemma and to make our intentions into actions.

It’s pretty cool the way they do it. myActions creates communities where members can share their actions with their online friends. That sounds good but, what’s even better is that for every action taken, a donation is made to a cause the user chooses, such as AZA Conservation Endowment Fund and EAZA Fund. The sponsoring comes from myAction’s partnering with a range of...

A new solar project is about to take off in Guam, an organized, unincorporated territory of the United States in the western Pacific Ocean. The partnership between Boeing and NRG Energy will generate 25 megawatts of clean energy that is enough to power 10,000 homes and offset the equivalent of two million barrels of fuel oil and diesel. NRG will chip with its experience and technical savvy in solar technology while Boeing will provide its engineering, procurement and construction expertise to the project.

Energy generated by Guam’s first solar project will be sold to the Guam Power Authority, the island’s sole electric utility, under two 25-year power purchase...

The world needs to make a transition to renewable energy as part of a global sustainability project, but until solar, wind and other renewables become the norm, there’s one solution that is available now: energy efficiency. More energy efficient buildings means less energy and fewer emissions, besides huge savings. However, financing projects is not always easy, since payback is not immediate, putting lenders off.

But New York City is looking at this issue in a different light, thanks to two initiatives. New York City Energy Efficiency Corporation (NYCEEC) and the recently launched New York State green bank are offering solutions for clean energy financing in New...

The extraction of bear bile for “medical" purposes is one of the cruelest forms of animal exploitation. Animals are kept in extreme confinement so that bile can be extracted from their gall bladders and sold for use as traditional Asian “ edicine." The full horror of this type of practice has been graphically illustrated by newspaper articles that tell the story of a mother bear who once killed her cub and then killed herself to avoid the grueling fate that awaited them. Fortunately, an increasing number of Asians are turning against this painful business.

Now, thousands of high-flying students represented by 100 Chinese Students and Scholars Associations (...
