(3BL Media/JUst Means) - Social media users this year have an opportunity to express appreciation for their mothers by showing off their talent as wordsmiths while doing some social good at the same time. MetLife, a global insurance company, has launched #Moem, a Mother’s Day promotion whereby participants can write poems of 110 characters or less. MetLife has even created a Facebook app of the same name to make it easier for aspiring poets.

(3BL Media/Just Means) - Electric cars need good batteries to store energy in order to assuage what has become known as ‘range anxiety—that is, the anxiety over running out of power before the destination and having nowhere to plug the car in. The production of renewable energy also requires a reliable battery mechanism to store the surplus power until it can be fed into the power grid.

Li-ion (lithium-ion) batteries are one of the battery solutions enabling the renewable energy and electric vehicle revolution to charge ahead. Its energy density can be twice as high as the density of nickel-cadmium equivalents. More recently, a new type of Li-on batteries...

(3BL Media/Just Means) - Americans’ consumer habits produce a hell of a lot of trash (4.5 lbs. per person, per day). About half of it ends up on landfills. It’s so much trash that it may be a bit hard for us to visualize it, so photojournalist Peter Menzen and writer Faith D’Aluisio embarked on a project together to show just how big a pile of trash American families produce.

The idea is similar to another photographic project showing what a week of groceries looks like across the world. Hint: it varies according to affluence, so it’s quite big in America...

It’s happening in Detroit, where General Motors’ local Hamtramck Assembly plant is working with the city’s nonprofit Michigan Urban Farming Initiative (MUFI) to help build an occupied shipping container homestead.

The 40-feet long, eight-feet wide and 10-feet tall container home will be constructed of 85 percent scrap materials donated by General Motors. Employees will donate their time and skills to help build it.

The materials GM is donating come from several of its assemblies and include items...

Earthsayers TV, founded by Ruth Ann Barrett, a sustainability veteran with extensive experience in marketing and media, presents video programs showcasing experts, business leaders, teachers, wisdom keepers and citizens from all walks of life.

Recently, Barrett wrote about her experience covering a conference at the University of Oregon’s Portland campus called What Is Documentary: Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow organized by the School of Journalism and Communication. Her text made me think about the concept of witnessing, which is the ethos driving many documentary makers and citizen journalists. Barrett, in her turn, was inspired by Kelly Matheson, Senior Program Manager at...

The company already has 26 solar electric systems generating clean power and a program designed to invest in energy efficiency.
